The world is such a confusing place when it comes to understanding what to eat with all the contradictory information available today, never mind the tidal wave of diets available. When it comes to eating healthy we should all focus on balancing our plates so that we consume healthy amounts of everything we need. This is where the eat well plate comes in!
You are what you eat.
We have all heard the saying ‘You are what you eat’ but it’s true. If you eat too much of any one food group your body will begin to perform poorly. This is why following the eat well plate is perfect for allowing our bodies to function optimally. The plate is split into 5 groups: protein, fat, carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, and dairy (and substitutes). Sugar and processed food is outside of the place as this should be consumed few and far between.

Why Those Portion Sizes?
Extensive research has been carried out into the foods we eat and our bodies. From this research the plate evolved. The eat well plate can be summarised as the following: Fruit and veg should be consumed with every meal and should take up around 1/3 of your plate. This ensures optimal micronutrient intake throughout the day.
Complex carbs, ideally 1/3 of your plate, are a key energy source for our bodies, including the brain. Consume them consistently throughout the day. Opt for 2-3 daily portions of protein, favouring chicken and fish over red meat for optimal well-being.
Dairy and substitutes are required even less so and where possible low fat and low sugar options should be consumed. Fats take up the least amount of room on the plate as they are much more calorie dense than the other food groups and so our bodies need far less of this to function.
Unsaturated fats are encouraged. Sugar and processed foods should be consumed in moderation as high amounts of both are linked to diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. If you can follow this guide, consume the same or less calories than you expend, then you are on track to becoming the healthiest version of you!
